International Rescue Committee’s Freedom Fund: The Tale of the Ugly Duckling

Presenters:

  •   Janet Harris, Vice President of Development, International Rescue Committee

  •   Hugh Dwyer, Director of Development & Operations, International Rescue Committee

  •   Poonam Prasad, Founder and President, Prasad Consulting and Research

In 1999, Janet teamed up with Poonam while conducting a study for the IRC. They recommended against mounting a campaign because its fundraising function seemed immature and its mission too remote for donors to embrace.  Nevertheless, the campaign launched with Janet, Poonam and Hugh on board.  Overcoming the predicted obstacles as well as losses in leadership, 9/11, the dot com bubble and the current downturn, it recently concluded with $110 million raised.  Come learn how thoughtful research, creativity and determination can beat the odds.

About the Presenters:

Janet Harris

Janet Harris is Vice President of Development, for the International Rescue Committee, the United Nation’s largest partner on all matters relating to refugees and displaced persons.  The IRC works in 42 countries around the world and resettles refugees in two dozen cities across the United States.  Ms. Harris is a member of IRC’s senior staff with responsibilities for setting the strategic direction of the organization, working with its Board and Overseers and ensuring ongoing support from the private sector.   With the IRC she has traveled to Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Liberia, Kenya, Sudan, Uganda, Thailand and Indonesia following the 2004 tsunami.  The IRC’s Development Department raises over $50 million annually.  Ms. Harris is responsible for the successful completion of the $110 million Freedom Fund endowment campaign which culminated with IRC’s 75th Anniversary in 2008.

From 1992 to 2000, she was a development and planning consultant for several prestigious nonprofit organizations including the Roundabout Theatre Company, The Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival, Berkeley Repertory Theatre and The James Beard Foundation.  From 1985 to 1992, Ms. Harris was the Director of Development at Manhattan Theatre Club and prior was a sign language interpreter for the deaf.  She received a BA from the University of Iowa and attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

Hugh Dwyer

As director of development information and operations, Hugh Dwyer provides strategic direction for the International Rescue Committee’s donor research, fundraising systems and databases, as well as supporting the overall goals of the development department through analysis and information management.  Now in his ninth year with the IRC, he has worked in a number of different capacities, including database management, prospect research, capital campaign management, grant-writing, and online fundraising.  Prior to joining the IRC, Mr. Dwyer worked in a for-profit marketing position and also worked independently as a translator/interpreter and ESL teacher.

Poonam Prasad

Poonam Prasad is Founder and President of Prasad Consulting & Research. In the face of drastic government funding cuts to nonprofits in the late 1980s, she established the firm in 1989 to help charities attract private philanthropic dollars to make up for the greatly reduced levels of public support. The firm has provided board and staff training, advanced research, audit, major gift, capital campaign, and publication services and helped raise billions of dollars for more than 100 local, national, and international nonprofits.

Ms. Prasad is on the faculty of New York University's Heyman Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising. She also is a sought-after trainer at seminars hosted by such nonprofit and professional organizations as the American Red Cross, Girl Scouts of the USA, NY-Presbyterian Hospital, Weill-Cornell Medical College, the American Association of Museums (AAM), and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

Ms. Prasad is the immediate past President of Women in Development New York (WID-NY), a professional association with almost 800 members which reached its highest membership level in more than 25 years during her tenure despite last year’s bleak economic circumstances.

Previously, she was a member of the Executive Committee of the Greater New York Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and co-chair of National Philanthropy Day in New York in 2006 and 2007, during which time the net revenue from the event more than doubled. She also initiated the first Research Track at AFP's annual Fundraising Day New York Conference (the largest one-day conference on philanthropy in the country) in 2000 and has coordinated it every year since then. Ms. Prasad also served as a member of the international board of the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA), during which time she launched its Virtual Seminar series.

She is also a member of the Foundation Center’s Consultants Network.
